Access is yours to check

This site says nothing about whether you may reach or climb these routes. That is decided by whoever manages the land — a park, a forest, a city, a tribe, a private owner — and by permits, seasonal and wildlife closures and local law, all of which change. A route listed here is not a route you are allowed to climb, and a route with no restriction noted here may still be closed. Check with the land manager before you go.

Recorded access notes — from our research, possibly out of date

NPS Shenandoah National Park. The 2024 park Climbing Guidelines say they exist to provide 'rock climbing, bouldering, and ice climbing within the Park' (https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/upload/2024_ClimbingRegulations_508-2.pdf): max group 12, no fixed ropes over 24 h, fixed anchors only where removable pro is impossible, no tree anchors across trails. Hawksbill summit/cliffs and Little Stony Man are closed; this site is not in a listed closure. Skyline Drive often closed in cold snaps (longer approach from below).

Ice watch

Ice watches run November to April.

Ice here is an event, not a season. A watch opens when a storm puts water on the rock and a hard freeze follows within the week, at this route's elevation. It is a rule of thumb, not a forecast that ice has formed, and it has not been validated: there are only about ten dated sightings in thirty years to check it against.

Cautions from the weather record

The model flagged no specific stressors in the recent weather record. That is the absence of a warning, not an assessment of the ice.

Reports from people who were there

No one has reported on this route in the past three weeks.

Including if there was nothing there. A report of no ice is worth more to the model than a report of ice.
